Looks like NIH to me. People involved with Wayland have said that Canonical's claimed reasons for not using Wayland are bogus (see https://plus.google.com/100409717163...ts/jDq6BAgdpkG and http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTMxNzY). If Canonical thinks Wayland isn't progressing quickly enough, they could consider helping. Perhaps that would be in the spirit of ubuntu.

Please. With Canonical's help it will still take another five years, AND Canonicals engineers will be wasting their time trying to push through changes that the rest of the project will deny because they are suspicious of Ubuntu.

    Like Gnome.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

Qt? Ugh. I thought Unity couldn't get any worse than it already was. I stand corrected.

Exactly, a lot of the criticism feels like sour berries over Wayland getting snubbed in favor of Mir. Even if Ubuntu went with Wayland, it's still a new display server and fragmentation would occur. X.org will continue to exist because it's useful in certain environments, but Mir and Wayland will duke it out, winner taking all, status quo restored now with a better display server.

Wayland devs can't be considered unbiased observers. They have their own agenda.

What Canonical has done here is directly analogous to, say, a bicycle manufacturer deciding to make its own pedals because the people it was depending on to supply pedals were taking too long to turn out a new kind of pedal that, even when delivered, wouldn't do the job.

That's a bit labored, but the point is that deciding you don't want to depend on a "community" of independent third parties to deliver a core component of your product is a rational business decision.

For those wondering, the C++ code-base that makes up Mir does require Canonical's CLA (Contributor License Agreement)

I'm not too much into this whole licensing bit, but what kind of consequences does it have that MIR is licensed under Canonical's own license, and not a normal GNU license?

    Qt is superior to GTK.

    http://www.canonical.com/contributors

With the contributor agreement chosen by Canonical, the Harmony CLA, the contributor gives Canonical a licence to use their contributions. The contributor continues to own the copyright in the contribution, with full rights to re-use, re-distribute, and continue modifying the contributed code, allowing them to also share that contribution with other projects.
Mir is, according to the launchpad entry, licensed under "GNU GPL v3, GNU LGPL v3, MIT / X / Expat Licence, Other/Open Source (Boost Software License - Version 1.0)". The Contributor License Agreement, I suspect, is simply hammering out that contributors own their own code (which will probably be required to abide by the mentioned licenses), but Canonical has final say in the project known as Mir. I don't see forking the project is disallowed anywhere yet.

That agreement is an agreement between someone who contributes code to a Ubuntu code project. It sets up a legal agreement between the programmer and Canonical so that the contributor does not have his code stolen. Please read about it. http://www.canonical.com/contributors Note this:

This agreement establishes a relationship between us and the contributor, gives details on what it means when the contributor grants permission for their work to be included in a project, and enables us to be better stewards of these projects.
The contributor continues to own the copyright in the contribution, with full rights to re-use, re-distribute, and continue modifying the contributed code, allowing them to also share that contribution with other projects.
Canonical is not creating its own form of Free Software License. Nor is it forcing any programmer to relinquish ownership of their code. This contibutor agreement is based upon this: http://www.harmonyagreements.org/docs/ha-cla-i.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrib...ense_Agreement

    Information please. Not dis-information.

It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

Coupled with migration to Qt? Expect closed source proprietary "extensions" down the road.
