Re: Difficulty Connecting to Wireless Network

An update: I tried, moments ago, to turn off the security settings on my network - still no luck. Just spins without connecting, but now without asking for a security pass phrase. So Maybe it isn't security?

    Any ideas?

I would suggest to try the driver downloaded directly from Ralink's site, which is apparently most stable with this card.

Just to make sure you have everything required to build the driver is preinstalled, run these commands while you are connected to internet via cable:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential dkms
(it would reinstall the headers, build-essential and dkms packages even if they are already installed)

Then download the rt2860sta driver from here: http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_supp...ort.php?sn=501
(You can also download the firmware from above link if required, although I see it already exists in /lib/firmware directory in 11.10, so shouldn't be required.)

Afterwards, follow this guide to build and install the driver: http://michael-peeters.blogspot.in/2...er-ubuntu.html
(it is written for RT2860 chip, but would be same for your card).
The download link in the above linked guide is broken, the correct one is what I have provided above.

Let's hope it works for you as it has for many others.

You can always request the mods to move your threads/posts to a suitable section by using the "Report Abuse" button.

Don't mind what it says, it can be used for anything that requires mods/admins' attention.

It'll be better to move that thread to this section instead, and close this one to avoid dilution of efforts. I'm going to request that for you.

Re: Difficulty Connecting to Wireless Network

Well I went through most of the process and many of the steps seemingly worked - but my problem seems to arise right at step one: extracting the tar file. I downloaded the appropriate file (RT2860PCI...) from Ralink and placed it in my home directory, but when I attempt to extract it I get this error message:

"An error occurred while loading the archive.

    bzip2: (stdin) is not a bzip2 file.
    tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I think this leads to my terminal not being able to find certain files and directory in later stages of the fix which leads to the process failing. During step 5, for example, this command fails because the terminal states that there is no such file or directory:

    sudo mv /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/rt2860sta.ko /lib/modules/$(un

    Any ideas?

What is the exact command you are using to extract the files? As the linked guide suggests, the extension name (bz2) is misleading, and hence if you are trying to extract it via GUI (double-click > extract, or right-click > extract here), it would return the error you got. So please try the command:
    Code:
    tar -xvf ~/2010*
while you are in the same directory as the downloaded archive. The GUI method would also work correctly if you simply remove the".bz2" part from its name (so it becomes only ".tar")

If the above command fails, then you almost certainly have a broken archive. Try re-downloading it.

Alright, I did this and then ran through the steps again and it seems like I've got a strong connection. I even put security settings back up, and successfully reconnected. Going to try a reboot now and see how that goes.

    Seems like it worked though!

Re: Difficulty Connecting to Wireless Network

If possible, setup your WiFi for OPEN mode and see if it connects reliably that way. You can put MAC filtering on for a bit to help with the security.

Then when you are convinced that it's working well, change to WPA-PSK mode If available. I know some devices I had did not support WPA2-PSK, but worked fine with WPA-PSK.

Also on the router; some give you the choice of AES or TKIP. AES is better, but try both.
