Yes well.. shipping will cost money, even if it's a few bucks.
If you are interested in having your distro for not too much money, you can look at OSDisc.

By the way, if you have a slow Internet connection, you can try some small distribution, like Damn Small or Puppy. There are more of them, just keep searching. But they don't have everything Linux has to offer, you'll probably find Ubuntu better than any of them.

Really, all you have to do is a quick Google search.

    Their respective home pages:

Most, if not all, Linux distributions have Live CD's. These two distros in particular, (I think) are actually meant to be run this way.

Also, if you have a slow connection, you could possibly download from somewhere else- a library, a friend in the city, etc.

Edit: Oh, and on a side note, there is absolutely nothing against the rules in this thread.

Like some of the posters said there are several distros that are only 50 to 200Mb. There is also the chance of using a cyber cafe to down load. If a larger distro that you want to try is out of reach for you pm me and I will burn it and mail it to you. Might take a while to reach you but I give away disks here quite a lot.

Fedora offers free CDs. They are rebuilding their infrastructure now, so you might have to wait a while before you can ask. Check out http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/FreeMedia

SliTaz is a really nice distro that only requires 28 MB of downloading. I use it myself and would be happy to answer questions.

TinyCore is only 10 MB, but you can't do much with it right now.
