PPC, Ubuntu 11.10, giving a mirrorserver error.

Quattro, did you use the live cd to install? Editing the hosts file was just a hack for the live cd. It is not needed for an upgrade.

Hello y'all,

I've came upon a problem and I'd really like to get this solved.

I recently burned a copy of Ubuntu 11.10 for PPC versions:
Downloaded here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
"Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) desktop CD"
It said it was oversized and wasn't capeable of being on a CD, but I put it on a DVD.

Put it in my Powerbook and booted it up while pressing 'C'.
Then I came up with a terminal where I had to press enter, well you know the drill.

The error came upon during the installation, while getting/configuring the APT I guess.
It said that the Mirror Server wasn't working, 'Ubuntu-archive-mirrorserver'.
It's giving errors in a loop while the installation process saying it's done and ready for a reboot.

While I reboot I came upon an error that linuxvm is missing (No such file or directory).

What do I need to do?
Ps. Sorry if this question is quite simple, I just started learning Linux and yeah, don't be too hard on me .

I ran into a bad mirror error myself. Even tried 12.04, same thing

Suffice to say 12.04 is definitely "off the table" for me right now until 11.10 can be figured out.

Do you mean you are surprised that PPC isos don't work out of the Box ? You know they are not supported at all ?

There is a possible solution to the mirror error on this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1770355 . I don't think very highly of the content of the rest of the post, so I've quoted the relevant bit of the post below:

So before you install try this:

When I entered the command "ping ports.ubuntu.com" I got the same numbers he did so you can probably just use those.

To open the file /etc/hosts type:

gedit /etc/hosts

Add the line:

91.189.92.175 ports.ubuntu.com mirror

Save the file. If you can't save it, you may have to open it first with root privileges. Use the command:

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

If it asks for a password just press the enter key.

When you get the installed system running you'll need to edit the sources.list file. You'll want to replace 'mirror' with 'ports.ubuntu.com'. It should look something like this http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...0&postcount=11 except you'll have oneiric written instead of natty.

How should that work, given that i'm starting from a live-cd???

Exactly how it is described except if you are using lubuntu then use leafpad instead of gedit.

I tried setting my location to Zurich and it failed, but setting to London installs fine - so that is another workaround.

A fix should be available to test tomorrow.
