    MacBookAir4,1 & MacBookAir4,2 (MBA 2011) support

    Hey there,

Has anyone got the chance to try install Debian or Ubuntu on the new MacBookAir models yet? Just to be clear, I am not talking about the MBA models that came out late 2010, but about the MBAs that were issued on July 20th, 2011.

I would be very interested to know about using the SSD with the AHCI driver and booting the laptop in EFI mode (both being unresolved issues with the previous MBA model). Of course, I would also like to know about support for the intel HD graphics and the new broadcom wifi/bluetooth chipset, as well as Thunderbolt (but there's a separate thread for that last bit).

    Thanks!

I would say that they're developing drivers as we speak.
But respectively have you google'd for 'em yet?

What drivers and who are you referring to? The new chipsets, or the Thunderbolt protocol?

If it's about Thunderbolt, yeah, I googled a lot, only to come up with people asking the same question and not getting an answer. Didn't find anything in the LKML archives either.

I'm also curious if anyone has got this working, and can't find anything. Not really surprising since the units just came out a week or two ago.

As for the individual hardware components. I can tell you that the graphics adapter (Intel HD 3000) is supported in 11.04. I've used that on a couple different machines with varying degrees of success (Dell E4310, Dell M4600, Lenovo X220).

Hi, I got a MacBook Air 4.2 and unfortunately, Ubuntu 11.04 does not support it yet. After the initial language selection and decision ("Try it from CD", "Install it" ...) the cursor blinking occurs, but after that the "Ubuntu" text graphic is not shown and the screen remains dark.

System info says (sorry, in german):

    Intel HD Graphics 3000:

    Chipsatz-Modell: Intel HD Graphics 3000
    Typ: GPU
    Bus: Integriert
    VRAM (gesamt): 384 MB
    Hersteller: Intel (0x8086)
    Geräte-ID: 0x0116
    Versions-ID: 0x0009
    Monitore:
    Color LCD:
    Auflösung: 1440 x 900
    Pixeltiefe: 32-Bit Farbe (ARGB8888)
    Hauptmonitor: Ja
    Synchronisierung: Aus
    Eingeschaltet: Ja
    Integriert: Ja
    Verbindungstyp: DisplayPort

So, if you intend to run Ubuntu on MBA 4-2, you might have to wait...

    Cheers, Georg

Hi Georg! Thanks for the report

Any chance you might try with the 11.10 Alpha 2? My MBA is on its way ATM, and either way my plan is to put Oneiric on it straight away.

    Re: MacBookAir4,1 & MacBookAir4,2 (MBA 2011) support

I was able to install Ubuntu by following this guide:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir3-2/Meerkat

There is one notable exception. Before booting from the cdrom, choose the partition editor from refit and let refit sync the mbr. After this I was able to avoid the "cursor freeze" as described in an earlier post.

As I am only just now installing I cannot answer any other questions yet.

    Cheers!

Natty. Wifi, audio works. Video stuck at 1024x768. No multitouch yet.

This is my first mactel--maybe this is nothing--but I'm happy to have it booting w/o any hiccups...now on to xorg.

Could you attach the output of the following commands to your next post?

    Code:
    sudo lspci -v
    sudo lshw
Thanks, and good luck with xorg!
