Try to install wine then install YM.

sudo apt-get install wine

I would say try one of the suggested alternatives given by Script Warlock.

But if asked, I'll go with Empathy, the default instant messenger in Karmic [or] Pidgin.

If you want to use a video conference skype is the better alternative, I believe they have a ubuntu installer.

Kung nasa Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 ka, may "Empathy" na yan by default. Yan na gamitin mong Y!M.

Kung nasa Jaunty 9.04 ka, may Pidgin yan by default. Yan ang pang instant message mo.
