Here's a simple guide: How to make a "Basic" deb
You might also want to look at Packaging and compiling programs section of the forum.

Re: How to make a debian package?

David,

If you are looking to learn more about the process as you go make sure you check the Complete Packaging Guide Wiki. The link itself is practically in the very last paragraph of the tutorial that fillm submitted for you.

If you get stuck you have two options. You can join us in the #ubuntu-us-fl channel on irc.freenode.net and ask for some guidance, or if you want we as a team have been meeting at least once a month to do some packaging and bug triaging, and you can join us and we can figure out what you may need with you.

Once it's properly packaged you can host it up on your own PPA in Launchpad, if it's not too huge.

Hope this helps a little,

Chris C.
