Nexus 7 now runs Ubuntu 12.10

If you'd rather not let your Nexus 7 live out its life as a Jelly Bean-toting device, Canonical's freshly minted Ubuntu Nexus 7 Desktop Installer can help. Instead of allowing Ubuntu to ride shotgun with Android, the installer requires unlocking the device's bootloader, which wipes the slate clean. Once the Nexus 7 is unlocked, started in fastboot mode and connected to an Ubuntu machine, the one-click installation software takes care of the rest. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes later, your tablet will be running full-blown Ubuntu. Since development is currently focused on getting the core of the desktop OS up and running, there's no tablet-specific Unity UI to see here. However, Raring Ringtail is set to flesh out the mobile experience with an emphasis on sensors, memory footprint and battery life, among other features. Those who regret ousting Google's confection-themed operating system can simply reload their device with stock Android. For the entire walk through, hit the first source link below.

this is nothing more than a time waster for experienced techies... note: make sure you do a full backup of your android install before putting buntu on it, cuz this program wipes and pushes all things droid data out of the way, sdcard excluded. this does-not turn you N7 into a dual boot setup like the other Linux-for-Droid-Devices do... once installed, ubuntu is extremely buggy, and be prepared for much lag, in other words, skip it unless your looking to kill a couple of hours, for no other reason.... rememember, once you decide to wipe ubuntu off your N7, and you will in short order, you must reflash your backed-up-rom and start all over again if you don't have your play-store-settings backing up all of your installed programs.

I thought one could now dual boot Ubuntu and JB.

I am posting this early Jan 2013, 3 months later.

Not yet, AFAIK (Ubuntu on the N7 was more a proof of concept to show it could be done... but hold on, in less than 16 hours there is going to be a big announcement from Canonical so perhaps it is coming - http://www.ubuntu.com/ )

From what I read the last three months have been spent with volunteers testing the development of Ubuntu on the Nextus 7. Old issues of the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter have links to blogs about this work.

A quote from the very latest newsletter:

Holbach informs us it is now possible to put Ubuntu 13.04 on the Nexus 7 without any additional PPAs or reflashing. Holbach also writes about further improvements to memory usage and recommends Alex Chiang's articles, which can be found at the following links:

It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

Ubuntu just unveiled a smartphone OS. I'm sure it wouldn't take much to move it to the N7.

Now its just a matter of getting the apps in shape for touchscreen.

Not quite no. Unlike desktop hardware, there is a lot of implications a mobile device has, such as locked boot loaders, proprietary hardware drivers, etc.

This basically means that a developer will have to tailor make an installation image for a mobile device such as the Nexus 7. It's not a "one image fits all" scenario like you get on Intel/AMD based machines.
