Recovering lost Password?

Hello, I haven't used my desktop in about two years and I can't, for the life of me, remember my password. It's not too much of a pain, other than that when the pc sleeps and is awaken, I need the PW to unlock it, though, start up doesn't need a PW, it's weird.
Anyway, I've tried holding Shift during boot up, but nothing happens, at all. What else can I do to get into Recovery Mode?
Or, how else can I change/find out my old and long forgotten PW?

o.k., I'm not sure why nobody has responded yet. it is a little bit of a sensitive issue I suppose. You need to boot to single user mode and reset the password. You should be able to go fish from there.

i don't think you actually need the password but to suspend the lock with password feature:

Just so you know ... there is no way to "recover" a password; instead, what you have to do is set a new password. That's what the instructions show you how to do.

Holding Shift during start up/boot up does NOTHING.

I'll see if I can change the screen saver locking.
