    Heh! The following leaves me scratching my head...

    I tweak a few files, every time GS is upgraded -- basically, aesthetic stuff. I change a few things I can't stand to look at, like the butt fugly time/date menu (e.g. digital clock) in the middle of the upper panel.

    One of the files I hack is:

    /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/workspace-indicator@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com/stylesheet.css

    I change the default file from:

    Code:
    .panel-workspace-indicator {
    	padding: 0 8px;
    	background-color: rgba(200, 200, 200, .5);
    	border: 1px solid #cccccc;
    }

    To:

    Code:
    .panel-workspace-indicator {
    	padding: 1px 7px;
    	background-color: rgba(000, 000, 000, .25);
    	border: .5px solid #aaaaaa;
    }

    No big deal, right?

    The funny thing is, this css file occasionally reverts back to the default code, in between upgrades.

    LoL! I don't understand the process taking place here -- never seen anything like it before.

    Agreed!

    When I get rid of the clock (/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/panel.js):

    Code:
    <SNIP>

    const PANEL_ITEM_IMPLEMENTATIONS = {
        'activities': ActivitiesButton,
        'aggregateMenu': AggregateMenu,
        'appMenu': AppMenuButton,
        'dateMenu': imports.ui.dateMenu.DateMenuButton,
        'a11y': imports.ui.status.accessibility.ATIndicator,
        'a11yGreeter': imports.ui.status.accessibility.ATGreeterIndicator,
        'keyboard': imports.ui.status.keyboard.InputSourceIndicator,
    };

    <SNIP>
    ...it sticks, until the next upgrade.

    Why NOT the stylesheet

    Weird!

    This is a real corker, isn't it?

    Last night, just prior to shutting down this machine, my GPU locked up, e.g. nouveau crashed. I was actually closing some apps, prior to shutdown, when the lockup occured.

    So, I simply pressed the power button, on the computer case, to power down, and I went to bed.

    This morning, when I booted up, the extensions loaded just fine at startup.

    Thus, I judge, the startup problem is actually taking place during the shutdown process.

    Put another way, since this machine didn't go through a normal shutdown process, the extensions worked just fine at startup.

    It's a riddle, wrapped in an enigma... LoL!

    This would be a good one for Doug -- wish he was running GS Staging.

    With my linux laptop pretty much ready for recycling tried an Ubuntu install to a usb 2.0 16gb drive. Was useful for some limited things though tended to get stuffed up & slow. (using a lenovo y580

    Decided to install to an external ssd (screen), works remarkably well, for the moment will just run this way on this laptop
    (The next laptop I get will have to have UASP support for usb 3 & maybe eSATA

    Nice!

    I've read that USB3 & eSATA external drive performance is indistinguishable from internal drives. UASP would be the frosting_on_the_cake, I suppose.

    I'll probably just keep running USB2 sticks. I'm partial to SanDisk Cruzers, although I've been known to pick up a handful of no-name USB2 sticks from time_to_time, for 'loaning' to friends.

    My only requirement is, USB sticks must have retractable tips -- they're the only ones what survive rugged handling, e.g. carrying them in your pocket and/or dangling from a keychain.

    That said, I've never tried GS Staging on a USB stick. Wonder how that would run?!?!?

    For Me it was very slow!
    KDE was a little better outside of heavy apps like browsers, and media apps.
    I ditched Gnome for KDE.
