did anything ever come of this, because i haven't been able to update ipblock, and since i just downloaded it, that means i can't use it.

Sourceforge.net seems to be down. So the update links don't work. You could manually download the lists [1] and copy them to /var/cache/iplist.

ok, now when downloading from there, do i want to right-click and save link as? when i do that i'm saving a .gz.php. is that what i want or do i just want the .gz? if so, do i need to do anything to convert it or do i just remove the .php ending?

    Re: HOWTO: Graphical IP Blocker

Right-clicking and "save link as" should work. The ending .php should be removed. Alternatively:
    Code:
    cd /var/cache/iplist
    sudo wget http://iplist.sf.net/mirror/level1.gz.php
    iplist

Hello. Everytime I start the IPblock gui it freezes. It's working from the command line. I've tried completely removing it and then reinstalling it and it doesn't help. Not sure what to do. This just started yesterday and before that it was fine. I'm running Hardy. In case it helps:

Which java version are you using ("java -version") ? Are there any error messages if you start the GUI ("sudo ipblock -g") ?

    Re: HOWTO: Graphical IP Blocker

    lwpack@lwpack-desktop:~$ java -version
    java version "1.5.0"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu6)

There are no errors when running sudo ipblock -g

The other thing I should mention is that the tabs Protection, Lists, Settings don't appear. The gui starts up completely frozen. I tried the java workaround in case that's what was causing it, but it didn't help. Thanks for the help.

    Re: HOWTO: Graphical IP Blocker

I've just installed this app on Hardy (Xubuntu) & it's working fine. Easier to get going than MoBlock for me, and i really like the interface. Is it still being developed?

gcj is not fully java compatible. You could try sun-java5-jre instead (Updating the default settings can be done with "sudo update-alternatives --config java").
