Wink Introduction

I'm new to the UK LoCo team and am reading these posts to see if I can lend a hand too as i've done work in the past (mainly with Unix) but want to help if I can.

Re: Introduction

hey,

New to the forum too and i could use some advice.

i have dabbled with distros of ubuntu before but never used one full time or in any meaningful way.

i want to learn how to host email, wordpress and websites and the cheapest way to do so for me seems to be a linux/apache route. i have read a number or walkthroughs but currently find myself a bit lost with all the new programs and coding that seems necessary.
i have purchased a dedicated acer nettop box to run my server which i plan to put ubuntu onto.

im fairly pc literate but have only a background in windows, until now my only encounter with the phrase "sudo" was through the xkcd comic.

is there anything i should read, listen to or watch that will give me a headstart or a route to take with particular software??

Re: Introduction

cheers Niko,

few questions,

what kinda of setup do you have for that? do i just need a copy of ubuntu and apache? what other software do i need to read up on?

is it better to go with the server edition of ubuntu or the desktop?

how did you learn to set it up? any reading you can suggest?

Re: Introduction

Hi all,
I'm also fairly new to the forums and am also just looking for anyway I can help out.

dougie_boy, I think your best route here is an Ubuntu Server install (select the LAMP option during setup). You may or may not be aware that the Server edition does not come with a GUI. You can however install one with the following command.

sudo aptitude install --without-recommends ubuntu-desktop

the, "--without-recommends" switch stops it installing Evolution, OpenOffice.org and other software you may not want. (Just leave it off if you do want it )

I've only messed about with Ubuntu Server on a limited basis but Webin may also be useful to you.
