    You could try

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install aptitude
    sudo aptitude reinstall lightdm

    if that fails try gdm

    sudo aptitude install gdm

I think this has nothing to do with the error above, because I try to remove lightdm and GDM status remains the same, I try to look for another error, I do not find other errors.

Is there another way to fix it? or to delete all associated with the gui, and tried to install from scratch, please give me advice.

I too upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and got this lightDM fail error along with SP5100 TCO Timer: mmio address 0xfec000f0 already in use.

I tried the above and no luck, I still get the mmio address error.

    uname -r shows I have

    3.0.0-13-generic-pae

    any other suggestions.

What is your latop and what does it have for graphics.

You are focusing on the wrong error. I have been ignoring that apport error on 3 of my boxes since natty alpha2 and have not had a problem with apoort at all. BUT, if you look at your error, it really says that /etc/rc2.d/xxxxxx Can't read the filename, line 6 of that file.

If you could post that file (and the syslog), it may tell us exactly where that problem is. You could do that from a LiveCD.

"rc2" is the defualt init runlevel for the desktop. This could be a graphics problem with either xorg or your graphics driver. Lightdm is falling out because theres a problem with the graphics elsewhere... At least from what I see in these previous posts.

Thinking about this one- Might be less work and frustration to just reinstall this one.
