I don't see any problem using non LTS, however, I would suggest wait at least a month (perhaps 2) before you do so (that applies to LTS as well) because in my experience new Ubuntu releases tend to be buggy and it is better to wait for post release bug fixes before you install.

If you got nothing to lose, then I say go for it.
    Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Bug reports don't just fall from the sky, people make 'em happened.(And you can too!!)
If the developers don't know there are problems, then nothing gets fixed.(They're dependent on getting the software on as many system as possible, but they have limited systems. Your system could prove helpful)
If the system is totaled then reinstall 12.04.

Don't mind me, I'm only passing through.

LTS stability is relative. If not mission critical just upgrade to QQ and see how it goes. Of course make backups and the like

I'm using the gnome-shell remix of 12.10. I find it appears to have issues with xorg on suspend/resume. I've only tried it on one machine (AMD AthlonII/Nvidia graphics card) so have limited data.

Is it chock-full of new features? I'd kind of like this to be an open-ended discussion about 12.10 in general.
I'm assuming that by "Ubuntu" you mean the standard Ubuntu with Unity. If that's right, then, if you use LibreOffice regularly, I would not upgrade to 12.10. LibreOffice is currently buggy in 12.10, to the point of barely being usable in its default state.

You can test and file bug reports by installing in a test partition. No need to risk screwing up your working installation.

Multiple partition and use them all.

Wow, it's been intriguing to hear all of the different opinions on this! I've really enjoyed listening to all of the different perspectives.
After hearing about how interesting it can be, I went ahead and took the plunge.

That was probably more frustrating than the time I gave my Windows a Rootkit virus.

Drivers, GONE. The entire system was so horrifically buggy. sudo apt-get install fglrx (to install a graphics driver) completely DESTROYED my system.
I had to use the Root Terminal to back up my files to an external.

Now I know my limits: unstable programs, stable operating system.
Apparently I've found the one situation in which Windows provides more low-level hardware access than Linux…
