    What is the best webcam?

Greetings. I searched the forum several times but could not find a direct answer.
I currently have a microsoft webcam, and I have determined via the forum that it won't work with ubuntu (I am running 9.10)
Which webcam would be best for me to buy, within the $40 and under range? Something that is easy for a newb to set up- like just out of the box or download a driver or two or something.
Please note: I found a lot of forums on what DOESN'T work, so lets try to keep this with what DOES work.

People tend to post on forums when things don't work, not when they do...

Any webcam in the world should just work, they are required to have a specific protocol...

If its a microsoft cam, they may have anti linux measures, but these should be easy to succumb, unless the part that isn't working is auto-tracking or some other non-standard feature...

Hi, first let me say that I am not very computerate, but I just bought a Logitech C200 webcam with microphone for 12.05 sterling, threw away the Windows software and plugged it in. Opened Skype, went to 'options' and 'video devices', selected 'test' and it worked straight off. The sound out didn't work so I went to 'sound devices' and selected 'default device' and everything works perfectly. Very impressed with it. Good luck.

I've recently been looking for good webcams either, the best index site i've found was:

    webcam reviews

These reviews here are excellent and contain the best webcams in each price range. Before buying its alsways good to check if your webcam is supported by ubuntu, but most/all webcams should work fine.

    Hope this helps

I'm using the Logitech webcam 9000 pro, this one can handle 720p and give beter images in darker rooms than my (expensive) Cam.

note: The older model 'Logitech QUICKCAM 9000 pro' does not support 720p

I've just bought a Logitech Webcam Pro 9000. I can record audio/video, but with some resolution, it doesn't quite work. For instance, when I try at 960x720, I get no audio.

Are you able to record audio/video at 720p?

    lsusb for my camera gives:

That's the best webcam in video quality. Linux support in 9.10 is perfect. I have been very happy with it. Do note that the red light technology thing is a software program for Windows and as such will not be present on non Windows OS's.

LOL the 'Red light' zone in my country is a ehm very pleasant area. You meant the 'right light' function.

Just making fun MechaMechanism... Good point.
