Re: Install the newest nVidea driver for Lucid Lynx 10.04

I just installed nVidia driver 295.59 on lucid. I have a partition with Precise 12.04 playing around with it to become familiar.
I don't think I would attempt to update the driver on 12.04 at least with these instructions.

But, if anyone is still on Lucid and wants to update, the driver just came out today June 11, 2012.
This is not for the timid. Read the first post carefully.

Those instructions are contained in the 2nd link of post #1. It is simply a matter of copying and pasting
except for the driver version name. Which you will have to modify.

If you're not comfortable doing the commands, I would not even do this. Because if you do not follow them exactly as stated
on the web pages you will have a system that does not boot. If you install the driver in this manner, you must perform the steps
in the 3rd link to make the script and move the driver or else when a kernel gets installed in the future, the driver will not be
loaded into the kernel and that kernel will not boot.

I am just supplying the 3 links. I have not performed this on 11.10 myself.

You might be better off using the xswat ppa which will keep your nvidea driver up to date.
Although I am unaware of how it will work on 11.10 here are the commands:

    Code:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
Then reboot after wards. That is probably the safest way to keep your driver up to date,

Re: Install the newest nVidea driver for Lucid Lynx 10.04

I forgot how fun and easy it is to update the Nvidia driver in Lucid.
I just updated to version 310.19 and updated the script in /usr/src/.

Awww, I'm going to miss Lucid come April...

In all the newer Ubuntu versions using Lightdm it has been impossible for me to update the driver.
But, I did see on Quantal the other day when I installed a gnome-shell it pulled in gdm and asked me which one I wanted to control video.
Lightdm or gdm. I clicked gdm so, maybe I can do that there now.

    Aw what fun.
