10.04 LTS to 12.04.1 LTS: "Could not calculate the upgrade"

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.04 LTS to 12.04.1 LTS using the upgrade manager, and I get the following message.

    Code:
    Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

     This can be caused by:
     * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
     * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
     * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal.

I read a couple of threads about this problem on Launchpad, so here is output from trying to upgrade in a terminal window.

    * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Do you have any third party PPA's or repositories that are still enabled?

    e.g.Hit http://debian.slimdevices.com stable/main Packages

Try disabling all the third party repositories and then also run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
to see if there are any updates still to be installed and not held back.

Then try the "update-manager -d" again.

Thanks for the hint. I'd already tried again, with all third pary sources disabled, and that changed nothing. I just tried detecting a better server (I moved from the US to France a couple of weeks ago), and tried again... still getting the same "Could not calculate the upgrade" message.

I took a look at the options in the "Updates" tab of the "Software Sources" dialog in the "Update Manager": I have three options checked for "Ubuntu updates":
    • Important security updates (lucid-security)
    • Recommended updates (lucid-updates)
    • Pre-released updates (lucid-proposed)

    and then one unchecked:
    • Unsupported updates (lucid-backports).

Part of the message I'm getting from the Update Manager mentions "pre-released" versions, so I'll try unchecking that option.

You don't have the headroom? Guessing the partition you have 10.04 LTS on is almost full. Upgrade needs space to download and store a lot of stuff which is later deleted. If you have 10.04 on a 15Gb partition and are using 13Gb, say, you have little chance. I could be wrong but that's a stab. Had something similar awhile back with same message.

Best to uncheck everything except the main tab. Doubt that is the issue though.

    I have 23.3 GiB available on a 70.5 GiB ext3 filesystem...

I've seen some crazy error messages from software, but I would have though that it would be simple to calculate the amount of space required for downloading the packages and give a meaningful message if there was not enough space available on the filesystem.

Got ya. So your / partition = 70Gb?

    That's correct.

I did a bit more poking around and found some logs, I wonder if this is useful?
