Hi! I'm trying to follow this guide but i'm failing at the x264 bit... i'm sure i did some kind of goof since i'm not really familiar with compiling stuff

Hi KhaaL,

Good news is that I have just updated x264 with no problems so there is no problem with x264 itself. A little housekeeping on your x264 files may help, try:

$ sudo chown -R $USER:$USER ~/x264
$ cd ~/x264
$ make clean
$ git pull

And then run the ./configure options / make etc as before. Hopefully this will straighten out the issue. If not delete the ~/x264 directory and all of its contents and start from scratch.

Edit: As I have suggested by private mail it may be required or some 64bit systems to also run this option with configure:

./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared --enable-visualize --enable-pic

Some details of this can be seen here. If can get some confirmation that this is required on 64bit systems I will add this as a footnote to the x264 section.

On closer examination:

Try losing the --enable-visualize option, or better still installing the MPlayer -dev files first (which should install the required file).

Edit: Before I submerge for another spell of night work I have removed the --enable-visualize option for x264 which I suspect was always going to be more trouble than it is worth.

SVN broke some types of MPEG1/2 VDPAU playback - devs have been reported to the problem.

Also NVIDIA have resolved some VDPAU issues in their drivers which will be in the next release from NVIDIA. This apparently fixes coloured macroblock artifacting in some VC1 and AVC streams.

Thanks for the updated guide, now it compiles successfully on my 64bit system! what I did was to download the all codecs package and overwrote its files with the 3 files provided with the 64bit package. it dont seem to have vpdau enabled though but playback is incredibly much more smoother... I've just tested it quickly though, will test it more throughly later tonight. Nullack, can you direct me to the announcement of the broken vdpau in mplayer?

You need the vdpau dev files installed for enabling VDPAU video out - check the output of ./configure to confirm mplayers build script is picking it up.

Hi everyone mencoder wasn't allowing me to continue the installation of mplayer. Everything went fine compiling, building. So i uninstalled the current mencoder version and the installation went fine mplayer is running great

But now

sudo dpkg --configure -a

gives this

Package mencoder is not installed.

Unfortunately ubuntu splits MPlayer into a bunch of different packages and one is Mencoder. This guide does not artificially split MPlayer in this way so there will be a packaging problem which will probably remain. It would be possible to compile twice disabling compilation of MPlayer and the MEncoder in turn and produce 2 packages with numbering systems to defeat the Ubuntu packaging numbers but that is all starting to get a little silly.
