Pidgin works very well and it is a multi messenger (msn, yahoo, aol, etc...) but you can't do video and audio with it..just straight messaging...
Yahoo messenger does not make a linux version...
you can use the on line version of messenger however it is like pidgin no audio or video. I use gyache cam works good havent gotten audio to work. Skype also has im but as far as i know cam is only in the
voice call.

@ Matrix01 you can just login to the web based yahoo for the sms function. no download needed . it is located undercompose.
I like gyachi for chat/video chat. right now i use skype for voice but am looking at other possibilities
