Just Give Me the Beans!
![]() |
Hello,
My Name is Sammy, From Mustang, Oklahoma.. Newly joined to the Team. Im actually new to Ubuntu but not new to the Linux/Unix environment. I work for the FAA, Not sure what to classify my job title as? The FAA calls us Electronic Techs.. but yea we are far from that. I work FAA En-Route Systems Right now the Main system I Maintain is called ERAM, It consist of about 50+ IBM P55 & P52 Processors, 2 Enterprise Storage Systems, and 1 IBM 3310 Tape Library. All of course Running AIX. We have several other systems that use various modified Red Hat Kernals. And we have a Air Traffic Simulation system that runs off of AIX as well. Im an Air Force Veteran, I Have A Master Degree from OSU in ComSci. And Ive worked for the FAA For about 10 Years. Im also One of the Main Helpers / Organizers of OkGamers.com . And I Have my own little Tech / Gaming Blog called Plasma Burn. www.plasmaburn.net . I really havent written any programs that where for public use? just a few personal things. The rest of what I write is for the FAA. Im Versed in languages.. Jack of all Languages Master of None. I do, do alot of Korn Scripting at work for our ERAM System. But all other programs I write are sadly in the .NET languages. Id say my best strong point would be my PHP / MySql skills. I love writing PHP. I joined the group because im really trying to get involved in Oklahoma Based Tech Groups or something. And im Really loving Ubuntu. Right now im running ubuntu on my Home Server, I Have 9.04 server edition on it, with apache 2, mysql, php all the fixings. I have several samba shares set up for iTunes and Pictures for the Windows Laptops in the house. I also use Ubuntu exclusively on my Dell Mini 10 Netbook. I Use this for forum post like this, but my main thing I use it for is work. I keep all my PDF's Notes, emails, and anything else to keep myself organized on here. Id really like to get in to Ubuntu / *INUX Coding. Im not even sure where to start really. But im sure it wont take me long to learn since I think most of *INUX is done in C. So Glad to be here, and Hope to see some more activity, I noticed on the calendar that most all the meetings are in Tulsa. Sadly Im only able to get to Tulsa about Once a Month, and Im usually up there for OkGamers.com Meetings. I work Nights 3:30 to Midnight Mon-Fri So Unless its on a weekend I dont think I can make it to those. Im going to quit blabbing because im sure not many will read this entire wall of text that was written. Glad to be here hope to meet some of you all sometime. -Sammy

Re: New to The Team
Thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself, that is awesome.
I have a server (VPS) right now running 9.04. I am new to the world of servers so I have been absorbing as much as I can about Ubuntu Server Edition. Look forward to having some conversations on this topic. Definitely alot of C used in Ubuntu. Also Python is used alot, oh and Pearl. Python/Pearl is like the VIM/emacs editor war, you use one and love it. Then you are required to loath the other one. (I dont know if you can tell which I like...*cough* Python *cough*. Are you on IRC? If so, nick? we are on server: irc.freenode.net channel: #ubuntu-us-ok

Re: New to The Team
Hi Sammy,
I've been writing software for 30 years, since middle school. These days most of my work is with Java. But I've been heavy into each C, ksh and perl in the past. I don't generally code much for ubuntu (have other higher priorities these days) but there's a 'thinking in python' tutorial that I'd like to check out sometime. A python tool like I'd like to check out is described in the link below. You might find either of them of interest. http://arstechnica.com/open-source/n...for-ubuntu.ars One thing I have been able to do from time-to-time is my my java and scripting knowledge to answer questions in the forums, or help with bug reports. You probably have the knowledge to do something similar. Regards, -james. |
