    Best Laptop for Linux

I've been using Linux now for about 4 years starting on a ACER laptop and for the last 3 years I've been running on a Sony VAIO VGN-FZ21Z. I've gone through Linux Mint and various operating systems of Ubuntu. Currently running on Ubuntu 12.04.

It's been a solid laptop but I'm thinking it wont be long till it reaches the end of its life.

With Black Friday deals and various other bargains for laptops out there on the web I'm on the search for a new more powerful laptop

I'm just wondering what make of laptops people find that works best with Linux.

I mainly use the laptop for the following

Gaming (love the Indie Humble Bundles)
    Music (Ipod synching)
HD Films (watch on laptop and hook up to TV)
    Internet

I know any laptop works well with Linux but now and again there are issues that come up with certain hardware (NVIDIA being an example of a few problems with lag in gaming)

    Thanks

    Jonny

It's actually refreshing to find a laptop distribution website without a Microsoft or Apple logo on the laptop screen.

Is their similar one to the UK?

Did you ever find a laptop that runs 12.04 well? I'm on the hunt as well.

    Hi,

    Toshiba Satelite 850 + Kubuntu 12.04

I bought Toshiba Satelite 850 pro. with the intention to install Linux on it. It had windows 7 installed and I put Kubuntu 12.04 next to it with no problems. There are few issues worth mentioning though:

    1. I did not check it yet but there is problem with sleep mode while closing the screen - it works intermittently and at times (say once a week) it freezes the laptop with black screen. Need to be _unplugged_ and restarted. Possibly it has to do with the BIOS - BIOS update is not helping.

    2. More annoying is that Kubuntu 12.04 does not have support for the wireless Realtec NIC. Little search solved the problem, however, the driver (rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_linux_mac80211_0006.051 4.2012) needs to be compiled locally. This created another problem. Every Kernel upgrade the driver must be reinstalled ("sudo make install") freshly.

    3. As just a hardware it heats up markedly while charging. It is good to have the machine sitting lifted a little for better air flow.

    Regards
Intel, Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, Oracle V-Box, AMD Ubuntu 8.04 Gnome.

You can also try Ubuntu Friendly, which is community driven vs. vendor driven, to find laptops that work well.

    https://friendly.ubuntu.com/

The project currently is targeting making it easier to get results in to Ubuntu Friendly and giving people who submit systems more feedback about the status of their submission.

Current cheap fav is the Dell E6400, you have to install bcmwl firmware and it has intel gfx. Besides all that it hauls booty.

I typically don't share sources for great deals but here you all go.

    http://www.offleaseavenue.com/servlet/Detail?no=50

    Offlease Dell E6400: $179.95 us
    clear && echo paste url and press enter; read paste; (youtube-dl $paste) | zenity --progress --title="" --text "Downloading, please wait" --auto-close --pulsate && ans=$(zenity --file-selection); gnome-terminal -x mplayer "$ans"
