repair ubuntu with live cd

Hi guys, my install buggered up after an update. I know I have seen it on the forums before but can't seam to find the link. What im wanting to do is boot off a live cd, and create links to my ubuntu install so I can do the latest apt-get update etc. Anyone know how to do this?

I quite often use a chroot like this:
