That could well be it. I think you can change the default port in mythtv-setup.

First make sure your backend is running 100%, that start looking at the frontend. I imagine that your "simple remote change" changed/deleted one of the basic system parameters from the mysql settings table.

Is your backend really called mythtv-primary? Do you have the correct settings for this host?
