I have installed awn from their ppa, not from the original repos. If you have too then go to the settings and change the mode to floaty. Then there's a slider at the bottom, I believe you can adjust how far away from the bottom you want it to be (not from the sides unfortunately :/)

This one is a bit more netbook friendly though, since I don't have to minimize my browser to view the time and download speed.

I believe even more netbook friendly would be to put tint to the side vertically. Although I understand that sometimes a netbook's screen can be too small even on the horizontal.
