    Re: how to install acerhk

What do the other tabs in the "AcerHK:: GUI Preferences" window say? I didn't realize you need to have a module loaded to make the LED for your wireless card work. Perhaps this is part of the problem. If you could please post screenshots (or copy and paste the text of) the other tabs, that might help figure out what's going on.

Also, what's the output (if any) of:
    Code:
    locate rf | grep kill
    locate radio | grep sys

    Re: how to install acerhk

Thanks for the screenshots. I've done some more research and it looks like the acerhk module is deprecated (see here for example) in favor of a new one called acer-wmi. If you type these commands, what happens:
    Code:
    sudo -s
    modprobe acer-wmi
    rfkill unblock all
    echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/acer-wmi/wireless
    iwlist scan
Do you see a list of wireless networks? If so, can you connect?
did u observe on the panel the wifi signal..... if i remove the ethernet cable it shows as if it is connected through wireless... but still cant access internet
I think it's not actually indicating that you're connected to a network. If you were connected, you would see some of the bars filled in; also, the command "sudo iwlist scan" would return a list of networks. I think the problem is still that the radio for the wireless card is turned off; we need to fix that before anything else will work.

That means acer-wmi (the new version of acerhk) may not be supported by your BIOS. What is the actual make and model of your laptop?

I'm sorry this is taking so long to figure out, but there actually appear to be multiple issues going on that are making things very complicated. Thanks for your patience.

    Re: how to install acerhk

Also please try running these commands and post the output:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install build-essential
    wget http://www.edbl.no/karmic/acerhk-fixed.tar.bz2
    tar -xjvf acerhk-fixed.tar.bz2
    cd acer*
    make
    sudo make install
    sudo -s
    /sbin/modprobe acerhk autowlan=1
    echo 1 > /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled
    iwlist scan
This will compile and install a custom version of the acerhk module from here that may work better than acer-wmi.

    Re: how to install acerhk

You now at least have the acerhk module installed, which is good. Unfortunately, you apparently still can't scan for networks. Does the led work? If not, does it if you type:
    Code:
    sudo -s
    modprobe acerhk
    echo 1 > /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled
Also, does the switch for your wireless card do anything now? If you flip it and type "sudo iwlist scan" do you get any results?

Finally, please let me know the model of your laptop.
