9.10 crashes with external monitor
Hello, Just installed 9.10 on my Dell latitude D420. lspci says I have:
Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) My laptop has many uses, when at work I take it to meetings (running from the laptop screen) and when at my desk I like to hook it up to a 19" monitor, keyboard and mouse. In ubuntu 7.10,8.04,8.10 and 9.04 I would type Code:
xrandr --auto I have tried going to System->Preferences->Display but with the external monitor plugged I get the same results and have to do a hard reboot. I am happy to post log messages if it will help debug this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions????

Re: 9.10 crashes with external monitor
Same thing over here with Latitude d520. After the crash i could not get Ubuntu started (seemed to loop somewhere)
I resolved the problem by starting in save mode at the root console and restored an older /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. I am still not able to use dual screens. |

Re: 9.10 crashes with external monitor
Yup, same here. I have an MSI Wind with the Intel GMA945 chipset, and I have the same problem. As soon as I enter the "Display"-app from the menu, I get black, frozen screen and have to do a hard reboot. I cannot use my laptop/netbook with an external monitor so far. Have tried two different ones. At home and just two minutes ago here at school. I have an MSI Wind U100, 2Gb ram.
Also, my memorycard-reader doesn't work. *edit. It works! I switched off the "Visual effects"_before_ hooking up the external monitor. Hit "Display", "detect monitor", and clicked my way to widescreen-heaven Hope it works for you guys too.. -lodravah Last edited by lodravah; October 30th, 2009 at 08:58 AM.. |

Re: 9.10 crashes with external monitor
I note that I have no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
Maybe I need one??? I've used these over the years and know that they can be a right pain in the backside to setup correctly. I believe that I am using xf86-video-intel as my driver, how can I check this? Does anybody know how to correctly setup and xorg.conf file for this driver and my laptop (card listed at start of thread) Or, is it something else causing the crashes? I feel really silly sitting at my desk typing on my laptop with my 19" monitor (that worked fine yesterday with 9.04) turned off.

I have the same problem with an Acer Travelmate (about 4-5 years old) with a Intel 915 Card, a 15' (1024x768 ) notebook screen and a external 19' (1280x1024).
Code:
#lspci | grep -e VGA -e Display 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) Code:
#xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2304 x 1024, maximum 4096 x 4096 VGA1 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 376mm x 301mm 1280x1024 60.0*+ 75.0 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0 832x624 74.6 800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0 720x400 70.1 LVDS1 connected 1024x768+1280+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 304mm x 228mm 1024x768 60.0 + 85.0 75.0* 70.1 60.0 832x624 74.6 800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9 720x400 85.0 640x400 85.1 640x350 85.1 TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) Switching off visual effects (as said before) seems to work, but I can't enable them later, neither normal effects. I wouldn't mind leaving them off but if there's a solution... and a question, is there a way to select which is the 'main' screen? I would like to have the menus and task bar in the 19' screen and not the laptop. |

Re: 9.10 crashes with external monitor
Same problem with Samsung NC10. Here is my lspci video controller section:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) When I switch-on my external monitor X crashes. No way restore situation: just turn off my laptop. I cleaned my xorg.conf file to ensure that old configuration generated from Jaunty wasn't the problem. THX, Diego |

Re: 9.10 crashes with external monitor
Same problem with Samsung NC10 & Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook.
9.10 is such a leap forward for me mainly down to the fact that all the Video features now work properly. It completely transforms the experience. The fault was mentioned in all the testing so it may be a deliberate decision not to support external monitors. I hope not. We have 3 Samsung NC10's which are great on the move or around the house, but for word processing you need the big screen attached and the big screen is great for the BBC iPlayer and so on. Unfortunately, I will have to leave 9.04 on the other computers in our house in the meantime as OpenOffice is used a lot. Major As with others I can mirror screens but the resolution on both is wrong. If I start 9.10 without external screen attached the laptop resolution corrects. With external attached if I untick mirror, and then set both resolutions as soon as I press apply both screens go black, the mouse cursor appears on the external screen and everything freezes. As with others only way to restart is to turn off power switch and restart. Overall 9.10 is amazing and I really appreciate the efforts of everyone involved. I hope someone knows a fix. Re: 9.10 crashes with external monitor
Same problem for me on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. For what it's worth, I found that if I enable the compiz crash handler, I'm still able to move the mouse around on my laptop lcd. The display is frozen on the menu for accessing the Display app, but the mouse cursor will move. So that's not much "handling" but still slightly different behavior. The external monitor display remains dark.
Hmm, here's something else. With the crash handler enabled, my keyboard doesn't freeze this time. I'm able to ctrl-alt-F1 to get the console. Is there a way to recover the x session? |
