(Relatively) Phonetic Hindi Input
For those who would like a more phonetic Hindi keyboard than is provided by the Phonetic, Itrans or Inscript keyboards in SCIM/M17n, I thought I'd share a couple of tweaks specific to Hindi input. I previously wrote a howto for Sanskrit input here, but obviously it's not ideal for Hindi. But based on the same setup, I've come up with two alternatives for Hindi. In both, the final virām or halant (्) is dropped by default from the ends of words. The first is for folks who still want a somewhat Sanskrit-like input for Hindi, i.e., (1) where you still type every consonant's inherent 'a' (अ) vowel within—but not at the end of—a word (e.g., करके = karake) and (2) the conjunct consonants combine automatically (e.g., प्रकाश = prakaash). The second alternative is for those who would like (1) every consonant's inherent 'a' (अ) vowel to be dropped by default (करके = karke) and (2) for conjunct consonants not to be combined automatically (here the 'w' or another dead key of your choice signals that a consonant should join with the following one, e.g., प्रकाश = wprakaash or wprkaash). I myself am not a fan of dead keys (like the 'w' in the second method), but I've included it for those who feel that not typing every 'a' within a word is worth typing a 'w' before every conjunct consonant. You of course can easily further tweak these setups to your liking, just be sure to avoid conflicts (which are not always obvious!). OK, for the setup:

Great post.. Thanks a ton.
I use the 1st option (explicit a after consonants). Just have 1 questions. 1. How do I write "Ksh" as in "Kshatriya / Kshama" not looking for क्श. 2. I tried printing a staroffice spreadsheet with Hindi fonts but got only [] kind of boxes instead of the hindi font. I use an HP Laserjet 1018. Do I need to install some additional fonts for the printer? Added on 21-Apr-2009: upgrading to ubuntu 9.04 reversed this change for me. I am back to the original itrans file, and I got back my 'क्ष' #the above post is missing an entry in the consonant section ("x" "क्ष्"). **CAUTION** adding this entry as is will conflict with the entries for ग़्, ज़्, ख़्, ऩ् etc. make sure to resolve all conflicts if you are doing it yourself***** You could probably also add back the ("GY" "ज्ञ्") as that is how some people type / pronounce ज्ञ. Can you please still help with printing question? Last edited by naklinaam; April 21st, 2009 at 10:52 AM.. Reason: Question got answered while upgrading to ubuntu 9.04 |

Re: (Relatively) Phonetic Hindi Input
Hi, I take it you've already seen that m17n supports Arabic script input for Urdu. I don't know enough about that script to say whether it could be similarly tweaked for more phonetic input, sorry. Since you do know the script, though, you might want to dig around in the relevant files in the m17n directory "/usr/share/m17n/". Tweaking isn't difficult and the syntax rules are fairly simple to derive. Best of luck!

As mentioned in a related topic: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=646207&page=3
the modifications suggested here are not working with SCIM under jaunty jackalope. Every help appreciated. |

Re: (Relatively) Phonetic Hindi Input
Re: (Relatively) Phonetic Hindi Input
@amerikkanu,
Hi, Me again, and once gain, thanks a ton for this great guide. I used this guide to configure ubuntu 8.10 with a Hindi keyboard and it worked great. I upgraded to 9.04, and tried the same script and it worked there as well. However, i did a fresh install of 9.04 recently and have run into some issue It works great for all keyboards other than 'hi-itrans' (I still followed the old settings). I have run into a crazy issue. Whenever I select Hindi Itrans from the SCIM list, it remains stuck with the previous selection (English keyboard or Bengali or whatever else I maght have tested with before Hindi). I am also able to invoke hindi Remington etc.. The only keyboard which does not work is the hindi itrans. Can you please help me get that working? I dont even know what information mighthelp solve it. The first thing I would like to look at is where do I map the choice I made from the scim panel to the actual file used for that choice. I guess something might be missing there. Can you please help as this is the only keyboard I really want to use in addition to English. Last edited by naklinaam; July 18th, 2009 at 09:30 PM.. |
