Computer won't turn down in 8.10

My computer won't shut down after doing a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10. After click Shut Down, I get logged out and the ubuntu logo appears (the one you get when you turn off the computer). But when it gets halfway through, it stops for a while, then I get a black screen with a white underline in the top left corner, and nothing happens from there.
Forces me to turn it off using the turn off button on my machine.

Anyone else got the same problem, or know what to do to fix this?

Try adding acpi=force as a boot option and see what happens
