    Question having offline repos

i got a ubuntu server 8.04 version for my 64 bit amd comp.
    i dont have internet.
i'd like to know what are the usual packages which is required which dont come with the cd..
    i'll like to have..
mp3 and a good video and dvd player
i want to run a web server(LAN) -mysql phpmyadmin apache
    need programming tools like eclipse..
ntfs support (is that by default?)
virtualisation software to run windows virtually
guess the other imp things come with CD itself..

what all packages I'll have to download? from where? and how do i install them??
can i save them in an external disk so that i can update it separately??

You can run tasksel from a command line to install apche2,mysql and php, when the tasksel window pops up select LAMP this will set up your web server.

Though this doesnt help in your decision for what packages to download, APTonCD is a solution you might find to be worthwhile.

    Re: having offline repos

I wish there is a such a tool/application which could do the following..
The application must generate a text file containing the information about a system - configuration, os preferences, list of all installed packages with versions..
when i upload this text file to some site (in another comp which has net connection). that must list me all updates, all new softwares and packages available. When selected the necessary ones, all the dependencies should be resolved and downloaded (may be bundled to an archieve) which shoud be installed on a clicks...
what i try to say is.. I need a portable version of package manager.
    Is there any?
guess its not difficult to create such one..

This would make more sense in sending free cds..
a free cd without even a mp3 support is of no use for a common user...

    Angry Re: having offline repos

It wud be better if there is a windows version of it also..
    Ard my locality..
There are lots of browsing centres and all have the only OS windows !
Most of my friends have comps in their homes (each one with different configurations and bought at different times). Most don't have net connections as they are not that cheaper here.. So used to go for browsing centers..
If needed a windows software.. it wud come as an exe.. so the installation wud be double clicking it with a few clicks of next and finish.
but if its for linux things are not so simple as it becomes cumbersome to recursively track all dependencies.. posting in forums.. trying out weird commands in Terminals and screwing up finally..
Ubuntu hasnt become fully for Human beings yet

If not such a software, Atleast try to send ubuntu DVDs with some more software

However, it seems to be offline...
