Searching a tar (tgz) file and selective decompression

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but I've searched google and couldn't find an answer.

I have backed up an entire hard drive (24GB) to a tar file with gz compression (tgz). I want to know if there is a way to search this file for specific extensions like .doc and decompress only those files ... without decompressing or untar'ing the entire backup. Is this possible? I would appreciate any help.

Open the tgz file with "File Roller"
click on extract and a dialog box will come up
you can select All Files ...Selected files ... or files with a filter
select Files and put in *.doc
this will extract only doc files to the place you have choosen.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try it later and let you know how it goes. Last time I opened an 8GB backup it took around 15 minutes for the File Roller to finally open it up.
