A request for a Powerpc ports section

A request for a Powerpc ports section.

Might it be possible to have a powerpc ports section on the forum in the other OS's section. Not specifically for Ubuntu but all Powerpc ports.

To promote the use of free (libre) operating systems on Powerpc (linux or bsd) architecture.

To collaborate with other free os's and their users and a shared and pooled knowledge on Powerpc.

An approach to regular Powerpc contributors in the Ubuntu apple forum and other distro forums. would help create a pooled knowledge base for Powerpc. It would also enable others to choose what is right for them, be it Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora etc and show a united front across all distros. United by our architecture not chosen distribution.

This would relieve the strain from the main Intel Apple group, as this group can only grow over time whilst Ubuntu Powerpc can only get smaller over time. This could only aide all in finding up to-date and relevant information. And provide a place for additional information for unofficial Ubuntu Powerpc by pooling knowledge from all of Powerpc. This option may be appealing to both Ubuntu by demonstrating their support of an extended community (a core aspect of Ubuntu ) and keeping officially supported and Powerpc users in general happy.

No distro wars! any emphasis should be on Powerpc and getting your chosen os to run on it.

A "Power directive" if it's free and runs on ppc "welcome"

A possible names "Powerpc ports" thinking of Linux and the BSDs.

possible interested groups:

Desktop and server

arch

bsd's

debian

fedora

gentoo

ps3

slackintosh

open-suse

ubuntu

yellow-dog

xbox-360

server - rescue only

crux

finnix

Any and all feed back and ideas welcome.

There's another thread requesting a PPC subforum.

Re: A request for a Powerpc ports section

Yes, thanks for the pointer but that's about Ubuntu forums merging the intel mac and Powerpc mac Ubuntu forums.

What I'm requesting is an architecture specific forum for all distros

Re: A request for a Powerpc ports section

I tried to get something like this at LinuxQuestions and was rejected. It would be nice to have a place to compare notes on which distros work well on specific PPCs. For my IBM RS/6000s, there's a reason I'm at the Gentoo forum. I use Ubuntu on my Dell, though. It came preloaded with it and Debian was my main distro before I bought it. If there's an Ubuntu flavor for PPC, I may need to try that, but Debian on PPC was a disappointment for me. The mailing list was a HUGE disappointment.

Re: A request for a Powerpc ports section

There is Ubuntu for Powerpc but its either offically supported older version 6.06 ( I think ) or the latest community supported version 8.04. It's interesting to share notes. My experiance has been almost opposite to yours, Debian runs great on my hardware. I guess that's a big part of the idea, matching peoples hardware to distro, and sharing that knowledge through out the community.

Re: A request for a Powerpc ports section

Our servers are under pressure right now . We are currently not adding new sections and are reviewing what sections we currently have.
