Is there a translator screenlet similar to Mac's tranlator--that is, word in one box and translation in the same (ie no internet referrer)?

Try stardict.
It is very good.
I use it with the Babylons dictionaties.
This site http://www.guiadohardware.net/dicas/...-stardict.html shows how to convert Babylons Dictionaries to Stardic format, unfortunately it is not in english (it is in Brazilian Portuguese) but you can try the codes.
