    Trouble with Updating ATI Driver for Direct Rendering

    It seems that every time I try to update my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro card on 8.04, using any of the installation methods, I cannot get fglrxinfo to mention ATI at all and it's all entirely Mesa.

    The first two inconsistencies I noticed was that http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide wanted me to access the Restricted Driver Manager which I could not find. So I passed over this step to Method 1. Method 1 went without a hitch until the fglrxinfo command which obviously showed something didn't go right because every line was Mesa. I also made every attempt to remove Mesa by removing everything that mentions fglrx, making sure the Device Driver is fglrx, etc.

    The second method on that page went well until

    sudo sh ati-driver-installer-8-4-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/hardy

    where it said I could not run it (yes I downloadeded it). I also could not collect packages "ia32-libs" and " libGL.so.1" before proceeding because I tried googling and searching the ubuntu forums for these but no luck. What's also worth noting is that Hardware Drivers makes no mention of ATI and it's really weird because it did prior to me trying out the plethora of driver install methods for various Ubuntus.

    I also tried using Envy but that did not solve the Mesa issue and because of that, I've still yet to get direct rendering on my computer which is my primary goal. That, and I'd like to get WoW running with my ATI card by resolving the rendering issue and the resolution issue I get from switching windows.

    Here's my Xorg.conf for additional info:

    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
    # values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
    #
    # You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
    # For example:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

    Hi,

    Can you post /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
    Could you also give a more complete set of specs for your system (amount of RAM, Motherboard, CPU, etc.)?

    The restricted driver manager is now actually called: Hardware Drivers
    Which is under System->Administration->Hardware Drivers

    Your xorg.conf shows that it should be trying to use the fglrx driver (if the module is installed on your system). Have you tried installing the ATi driver from the ubuntu repositories?(code below should install it)

    Code:
    $ sudo apt-get update
    $ sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

    Yea, no dice.

    Re: Trouble with Updating ATI Driver for Direct Rendering

    This is a great question for the ATI developers directly.

    You should really be participating on the Phoronix forums where those guys hang out and make themselves available.

    Relevant forum: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=19

    I don't understand why your script isn't building the proper packages for you... there must be something unusual going on. John Bridgman and Alex Deucher are the guys you'll want to talk to, they are both ATI employees directly involved in the open source driver development team.

    Oh, and P.S. - Method 2 on the cchtml wiki guide IS the correct way to install it. I have no idea why you are having this issue.

    P.P.S - Are you using the 64-bit version of Hardy?? If not, you don't need the ia32-libs and libGL.so.1 packages.

    Re: Trouble with Updating ATI Driver for Direct Rendering

    I think something is wrong with the fglrx modules that the X server is trying to use.

    (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
    This is from your Xorg.0.log ... this is bad. Something is being mis-configured when trying to load the fglrx module (it looks like either it is getting the wrong PCI-E or AGP slot). Can you run the following (and report the output):
    Code:
    $ lshw -C video
    $ lsmod | grep fglrx
    [drm] failed to load kernel module "fglrx"
    (WW) fglrx(0): Failed to open DRM connection
    Also bad.

    (WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
    (WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
    (WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
    (WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
    (WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
    (WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *
    I'm guessing that this warning is due to the earlier errors/warning in the Xorg.0.log

    P.P.S - Are you using the 64-bit version of Hardy?? If not, you don't need the ia32-libs and libGL.so.1 packages.
    I think he may still need these if he is using the 64 bit version.

    Re: Trouble with Updating ATI Driver for Direct Rendering

    I had this problem upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04

    This is the topic :
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=762320
    Code:
     Google Earth + Latest ATI driver = Crash
    I noticed that the ATI driver wasn't set as a restricted driver anymore in this release.

    But the issue i have is that the newer driver will cause X to restart if Google Earth is loaded.

    What ATI driver version was in 7.10 i am currently using 8.04 so i can't just unistall the driver.

    ~Solved~
    Needed to reconfigure Xorg Server so that Restricted Drivers would work.

    to reconfigure Xorg Server use this command

    Code:

    $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

    And I am sure : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=758576
    (linked to it by Tim sharitt)
    helped a lot too.

    After that i played a 3d game and I was asked if i wanted to enable restricted drivers (it wouldn't do this the other 5 times i tried the game).
    I edited what i did in the thread starter post along with the commands needed.

    I started off thinking it was something different and found out how to solve it.

    turned out to be a simple need for an xorg-xserver reconfigure and to play an OpenGL in order to be asked about restricted drivers.
    Desktop : 2.1Ghz Athlon 64 x2 65watt, DDR2 800 Mhz 2x1GB RAM (1.5GiB available), ATI x1200 On-Board 512MiB Shared Video RAM.

    Re: Trouble with Updating ATI Driver for Direct Rendering

    Have you tried using the open-source "radeon" drivers. It has been proven that they are a better driver than the official ATi ones.

    Use the radeon driver.

    Then follow these tips:

    1 ATI card.
    32 bit although I'm unsure.
    Tried the open source drivers that were linked but still no direct rendering.

    Also, I tried reconfiguring my Xorg file with that command line but all I got were questions about my keyboard and it didn't seem to fix anything.
