How to perform a ubuntu-minimal install?

I have read many threads regarding how to do a 'minimal' install. But none actually give the steps taken. I have tried with the mini.iso and the 7.10 alternate ISO using cli-expert. But both get me a standard install that is around 590 - 600MB, which is about the same as if I just did a regular command line install or server install.

Is it possible to install just the very basic (no sound, no video, no GUI) using far less space (maybe more like 200MB instead of 600MB)?

Even with cli-expert mode I was never given an option of packages to install or not install and it appears to just go ahead and install many things that I do not want or need (pcmcia modules, wireless tools, sound tools, video tools, etc.).

Not sure if what i am trying to do is possible. But I would like to trim down the size considerably and do a real 'minimal' install.

Thanks!

with those methods, you still wind up with more than the OP wants. basically what he already tried.

perhaps you could try Arch Linux. you could get a truly barebones install with that. or even LinuxFromScratch (be prepared to study) you could leave yourself with little more than the kernel itself.

These were pretty much the 2 URLs that I found and followed and get me to over 500MB. I was reading threads of installs around 250MB. But wasn't sure how they were able to just install the ubuntu-minimal meta package.

I am basically trying to figure out how to ONLY install the ubuntu-minimal package.

Are there any other options other than cli-expert that might let me choose this?
