I think when people rashly make comments about "other software companies and operating systems" like they are the plague, its rather disheartening and steals from the whole idea of open source, FOSS, and GNU and how it has the potential to benefit everyone from dev to end user.
Thanks.

Sometimes it's a fine line between one's dedication to open source and one's desire to see desktop Linux advance to the mainstream. I'm 100% confident Canonical and Ubuntu will find the proper ways to walk that line, likely through a wide range of choices for the varied Linux users.

Hows the Mitt Romney Campaign going? - Have you managed to get him to use Ubuntu aswell?
Mitt's a very bright guy, and I look forward to giving him a demo of Ubuntu one day. Obviously, right now isn't the best time for that, given his schedule, but I think he'll like what he sees.

Have fun here, and I have a feeling your forum post will inspire some Linspire/Freespire users to try Ubuntu.
Because Linspire/Freespire are based on Ubuntu, they're already quite familiar, and most have favorable opinions of Ubuntu. No one can argue Mark, Canonical and the Ubuntu community have been EXTREMELY positive for the advancement of desktop Linux.

Technically, Linspire isn't all that far apart, being based on Ubuntu, but the direction Linspire is taking as a company, present leadership, future prospects, etc., are what have brought me to Ubuntu. As I say, this is where the action is, and where I think I can have the most success with my personal computing needs, and have the greatest impact in my desire to support desktop Linux.

Perhaps one more thing, did you ever find yourself running any non-Lindows/Linspire distro or OS on your daily-usage machine when you were running things at Linspire? =]
I'd never say never. I suppose if the right opportunity came along that I really believed in, I'd consider it, but for now, I'm quite busy with my current ventures and happy with running Ubuntu.

When I was at Linspire, I always looked at all the distros to learn things to improve with Linspire, but I always ran either Linspire or Freespire on my PCs. I was always very impressed at the progress Ubuntu made in such a short time over the last few years, so much so I moved to it as the baseline for Linspire.

I still believe ease of use is important if Linux is to move to the mainstream. I'm confident Ubuntu, now that they are getting good OEM traction, will agree and continue to move in that direction, becoming easier to use with each release. As a member of the community here, it's something I'll advocate.

Re: Ubuntu - My New Home

I think, Kevin, what a lot of people want to know is where this change of heart came from. It seemed like not so long ago, you were talking about people as software pirates.. that you were using a lot of rhetroic.

In a sense, that rhetoric has poisoned a lot of opinions about you, and about your judgements. Even in this thread, you state that you are no longer directly connected to desktop linux.. and then, you basically throw a pitch at Canonical stating that "Linux needs more than this , that , and the other .. and that you can supply it."

Your motives are in question, sir. Your previous actions are the reasons why. I'm glad you have found a home with Ubuntu. I'm glad you're happy with it. But your .. marketing.. is less credible in the Linux community than many of us would like.

The only thing that Kevin has said that comes close to what you are suggesting is that distributions and users who decide to install decoders for patent-encumbered formats and DVD decryptors are in effect pirates, which is a true statement at least in the USA.

Running Ubuntu or any distro doesn't imply that you are a pirate, but you sure can be one by turning on the correct repositories and installing the right packages.

Red face Re: Ubuntu - My New Home

Mitt ‘freakin’ Romney?!?!?*snip* Maybe Kevin Carmony is pushing open source in an effort to help the budget. Let’s see, save a few hundred bucks on each computer by using open source to pay for a $12 billion dollar a day war that Romney supports.

I, for one, don’t hate brown people. I hate violence and war, and in turn, Mitt Romney and Kevin Carmony.
