    Kubuntu - AAAAAGH!!!!

I've been working on Vole (aka MicroSoft) machines for 20 years. I remember what it was like getting started (Every year fewer and fewer computer people know any DOS commands).

Now I have a new PC which will be dedicated to Linux. I started a year ago with Debian and am now using Kubuntu. From time-to-time my guru brother is able to help me, but until I can pay to fly him here, he can't, and shouldn't have to, fix everything.

The install for Feisty (7.04) went without a hitch. If the only thing I was going to use were the Open Office programs and Konqueror, I'd be delighted. But no, I want an application (Medusa4) which isn't in any of the Devine Repositories, I've used the installation helps available through the Internet, and now that it's installed, the program doesn't work. I also want the install Twiki, and having done that a couple of different ways, that doesn't work either, and Twiki is in the Devine Repositories! Things aren't going the way they're supposed to according to the documentation? Twiki's support forums are well hidden, if they exist at all. Konversation can be helpful, but I'd sure like to know when the adults come online

Then there's the more mundane apps, I'd sure like to find a good MP3 player. So far I've tried Amarok, juK, Kaffeine, Noatun, and Rythmbox. So far, Rythmbox is the only player which plays my MP3s. It makes them sound like they're being played inside a cardboard box, and it lacks a PAUSE and STOP button.

Linux and Ubuntu may revolutionize the computer world, but before they do, installation of programs is going to have to be dramatically simplified (read: automated), and produce more reliable acceptable results. And when I click on the report-a-bug button in Rythmbox to ask for a PAUSE button, LaunchPad.net is going to have to avoid sending me off to NeverNever Land after I've entered my login name and password.

Just click the play button in Rhythmbox to pause / stop, or right click on the icon in your systray and click Play / Pause. Not that hard.

A disproportionate number of your complaints have nothing to do with Linux. Yes, the Linux developers really need to keep the kids off Konversation. Wait, what?

Linux has nothing to do with how programs are installed? What about Ubuntu? Who's in charge of user friendliness?

The Ubuntu developers have no control over who populates an IRC channel, was my point.

These might help with some of your other issues:

I'm not at all familiar with Medusa4, and the developer's web site for it seems to be dead, so I'm afraid I'm not much help there.

Really agree with you. Linux developers should get some Human Interface Classes. The only developer i like so far is the guy who developed php. a lovely language. its like you're speaking english

and who the hell called ubuntu- linux for human beings, its for geeks. What people hate most is change, they don have time to learn new things. 7.04 has got a remarkable effort in its interface, like the effects. really love them.

but installing software is still a big hassle. I wish linux had this control panel, where you would just go, click a program and it would uninstall it. not much questions. a Program Files folder, where all the program files were.

setup.exe files, which could be downloaded, and backed up. a beautiful search like thing like spotlight.

Especially the media player, for windows is remarkable. Easy to use. Rhythm box looks really ugly.

I wish i were a developer for linux!!!

Uh. There is. Applications > Add / Remove Programs. No terminal, no muss, no fuss.

There is a folder where all the program files are, but unless you're doing some high-end stuff, you shouldn't ever be messing around with it. The Applications menu is where all your programs are listed if you just want to run them.

And you can always use Synaptic if that's too simple, I suppose.

Use XMMS for mp3 playback. It's like Winamp. Nice and lightweight.

The best audio player is still XMMS and really, regarding software install/uninstall, what is so hard about using Synaptic or Add/Remove programs?

Have you looked at the Forum called Multimedia and Video? Right at the top there are stickies pointing to installation guides...
