    Need advice on boot/drive oddities

    Hi - I recently rebuilt a Windows machine, putting Ubuntu on a new drive (dev/sda). The plan was to then add the old Windows drive as dev/sdb in order to access old data.

    However, I think what I ended up doing was installing Ubuntu on the new drive as sdb, made some other mistakes, then reinstalling it on the new drive as sda.

    Worked fine to start with, then I connected the old Windows drive and made some other hardware changes, and couldn't boot. Disconnected the old Windows drive and ran boot-repair from a LiveCD, accepting default options, and it now boots with the warning message "Disk drive for /dev/mapper/server_swap-1 is not ready yet or not present".

    I can skip mounting this and the system will start OK, and it's not mentioned in the boot-repair log - I'm thinking this is something left over from my aborted initial Ubuntu install?

    There are also references to RAID - the machine did have a RAID card installed but not used so perhaps drivers were automatically installed with Ubuntu?

    I'm also confused by the reference to MSDOS in the summary:

    I do not know LVM nor VitualBox which it looks like you used to install. Not a typical desktop install for a beginner.

    You also only show sda, not any other drives.

    LVM = Logical Volume Management, which is defaulted to on installation (at least for 12.04 Server).

    So on sda I have a volume group 'volgroup' and a partition within that 'VirtualBoxVMs' which I will use for VMs. The machine itself is not virtual.


    I do not have other drives attached currently, and want the machine to run OK with that setup.

    I am new both to Linux and this forum, and the guidelines told me to post in Beginners. If this belongs elsewhere, please could you or another moderator move it?

    If not familiar with Ubuntu often best in Absolute Beginners. But your install is not a absolute beginners install.
    Moved to server sub-forum.

    I do not know server installs with RAID, LVM or virtual box.
    I have installed server just to install it, but did not get LVM. Did you choose encryption? Perhaps other choices may also add LVM?
