Compatible with what?
All the available applications will do what you want with no problem. However, they all manage the photos differently so you will have to study them all and make your own decision about which is best for you.
I've looked at most of them over time, but like digikam best, and even though it is a KDE application, I use it on my gnome Ubuntu, along with one or two other KDE apps (k3b and kmymoney).
Xubuntu 12.04-64bit --- Boot-info-script and Boot-Repair --- Grub2 wiki & Grub2 Basics --- RootSudo --- Wubi megathread
GIMP is my favourite.
Shotwell is the photo viewer/manage installed by default . If you want more advanced features for editing Gimp is a good choice as stated above. F-Spot was default manager/viewer prior to Shotwell and is in the software center.
Some people like Gwenview.
For quick photo viewing the default viewer (eog) is fine.
For viewing and culling large numbers of images I like geeqie.
I use DigiKam for tagging and organization.
RawTherapee is my RAW converter of choice.
And (of course) GIMP for post processing.
Gimp!!!
Please & Thank You
