I have been unable to download from my EtrexH to either EasyGPS or to Viking since using Xubuntu 12.04. Previously when running Ubuntu 11.10 I found that the prefix /dev/ttyUSB0/ allowed access to both programmes.

Can anyone tell me what other prefix must be used with Xubuntu

The Etrex model I have requires a serial port for connection and I use a serial to USB adapter to achieve this. There has been no change in this arrangement since running Ubuntu 11.10.
