    New RaLink RT3090 causes kernel panic

    I've been using Linux for a while now, and my old wireless card was causing WAY too many issues that no one could figure out (kernel maybe), so I checked my computer's guide for a list of supported replacement cards and did some digging to find a suitable replacement.
    I decided on the RT3090 finally, and after installing I noticed the bluetooth was working right away, but the wireless was not. I had the foresight to download the driver package and linux-firmware package (the latter refused to install, eventually gave up). After a quick tweak to fix my first issue (kernel version too new? really?), many minutes of compiling the HUGE tarball (1900 files?), I got the wireless working fine using Wicd.
    As I am on dual-boot, I then proceed to install the drivers into Windows 7. No problems here (interesting note: wifi working out of the box, not BT, reverse of Linux lol).

    I then go back to my Ubuntu desktop, and all seems well until I get the "Connecting to (my network)" message. All of a sudden I get a kernel panic and I have to force shut down.

    Upon further investigation, if I RF_KILL on startup, the panic does not occur and I can load the desktop normally. If I then re-activate the wireless with Wicd open to see progress, it panics on "putting the interface up". The panic occurs every time it reaches that step.
    What puzzles me is that it worked before after a couple reboots, but as soon as I install it on Windows, it hates me!

    [strikethrough]UPDATE: I can connect now by removing a blacklist for the RT2680 driver... Go ahead and bash me, I'm an idiot for listening to the solution page that told me to do it. One difference from before though: instead of ra0 it is in my iwconfig as wlan1. No clue why.[/strikethrough]

    Update 2: It was working because it loaded the wrong driver (oddly enough). after forcing it to load the right driver, I managed to ifup ra0 without incident. After that, I just got another panic handler. Seems it's STILL using the wrong driver, before it crashed I noticed it said "rt2850sta" was my driver, that should be "rt2860sta" since thats the chipset.

    Please? someone? help?

    I've pinpointed the problem to the WPA, it works with WEP and OPEN.
    When compiling, I get several errors, mainly format errors (it was made for a 2.3 kernel I believe) but it does compile and install. Already tried several "patches".

    Still no luck, even tried a couple other packages...
    And now I've noticed the bluetooth isn't working right either
    I'm going to stop trying to fix it until tomorrow, but please post ANY ideas.

    I guess I just have a knack for finding problems that no one knows how to fix.
    I challenge anybody that knows about old kernel drivers on new kernels to come up with ideas!

    I finally gave up after finding a ppa that would help me... if I had 11.04 still. It was either downgrade to the older kernel that was used in 11.04 or get something else that would work. It seemed a lot less work to buy an atheros usb card for $10 off ebay that will run off the ath9k_htc driver.
