    Angry After 6 years

I have been a Ubuntu user for over 6 years, and I saw the greatness of this distro peak in 2009. I started using spinoffs in 2011. I watched a 11.04 to 11.10 upgrade on my laptop bring annoyances, but thought the new program list was worth it. But then last week, I updated my production computer from 11.04 to 11.10 and was rather disappointed. I call it The Botched Upgrade. The sound stopped working, GTK went from fast to ~4 second response times, and boot went from 30-50 seconds to more like 2 minutes. I'm now using Mandriva Linux. Farewell, Ubuntu, may you figure things out before you scare all your users away.

Maybe give Xubuntu 12.04 a try? It's blazing fast and incredibly responsive, and XFCE 4.10 (via ppa) is awesome.

If not, sad to see ya go and best of luck!

I really liked Xubuntu 11.04. I'm just not sure that that is the solution to the problem. I may try out Xubuntu 12.04; I know that standard 12.04 is rubbish, though. Not quite as slow, but has the same symptoms that my shredded install had. Who knows? I may dual-boot, but, practice has shown me that I choose one of my multibooted systems to use 95% of the time.

By the way, when you said you updated from version to version how did you do it? Did you go direct upgrade method or a clean install method?

I've always been a direct-upgrade, one-drive type person. Until now. I had seriously thought about doing the fresh-update method, but didn't want to lose my /etc. Doing the development and server stuff that I do, it's really a pain to lose your databases, manually installed packages, and precisely tweaked configurations (pun not intended.)

Also, I feel that I ought to mention that this is the first time my questions on the forum have brought response. Thank you.

I do also suppose that it is a good thing that I waited a week to post this, or it might have been more of a flame.

    Six years. Four beans.

Maybe you didn't bump your questions?

Because of the large size of the forum and the vast diversity of topics encouraged (or tolerated), posts relating to support, which IMO should be the primary purpose of the forum, tend to vanish off of the radar which I define as clicking on the "New Posts" link.

And forum etiquette suggests you bump no more than once every 24 h.

BTW, your join date shows May 2012. Is that correct?

    Re: After 6 years

I've had another nick. I've never bumped posts. It used to be a challenge even to find my own posts, as the ego-search is very inconspicuous on this forum software. I actually started posting my Ubuntu problems on a completely different board, because I could actually get answers of some sort there.

I figured that out a while ago.
