Support for ALC898 was added in kernel 3.0
Try using a 3.0 or 3.2 backported kernel.

Yes works great, did automatic install with 3.0, now have 8 channel sound.

I can't get sound working with Ubuntu 12.04 and my Gigabyte GA-Z77H-UD5H (Realtek ALC898 chip). Works just fine in Windows. I already have kernel 3.2 obviously - what to do?

same sound problem with maximus v gene using Realtek ALC898 .. no output from green output port.

ubuntu 12.10 & all updates as at 27 aug 12.

seems to work out through my monitor sound output via HDMI.
