    Lubuntu vs Ubuntu with LXDE

Hello, there. This is my first post, happy to be here.

I've been wondering if there's any significant difference between Lubuntu and Ubuntu with LXDE in terms of memory consumption?

I'm planning to install whichever would work best on my Atom netbook which has only 1GB of memory.

And please let me know if there's anything in particular that I need to consider before making my final decision.

Thanks for your time in advance.

Re: Lubuntu vs Ubuntu with LXDE

I have just recently swapped ubuntu 11.10 for Lubuntu 11.10 on my old desktop and I have noticed a considerable change/faster in it's ability to start up, run more than one program. The big difference is that it no longer gets "laggy" when opening and closing programs.

It actually runs IDJC (broadcasting program) a lot better on lubuntu

    It's much happier.

The plain old Lubuntu install will be slightly lighter, but not by much. A few daemons that come with Unity/Gnome3 may carry over into the LXDE environment.

Thanks for the replies. That One Stop Thread looks super helpful.

Just to update, I installed the latest Lubuntu 12.04 on the laptop the other day, and I've been very impressed with its performance and stability so far. At this point, I'm not too sure if I should be bothered to give Ubuntu or other derivatives a go. Perhaps CrunchBang with the latest Xfce 4.10, but I'm very happy with Lubuntu at present. Thanks!

Re: Lubuntu vs Ubuntu with LXDE

LXDE is an ultralight desktop environment. Lubuntu is not just "Ubuntu with LXDE tied on." It has specially chosen lightweight applications to go along with the lightweight desktop environment. Ubuntu with LXDE would be "slower" because of the default applications used in Ubuntu. The majority of memory usage comes from applications, not as much from the d.e.
