Multiple Monitors with ATI Radeon HD 4670

I'm having trouble setting up both of my monitors on Ubuntu. I can mirror them but not extend them. When I try to extend the displays I get this message.

The selected configuration for displays could not be applied
    required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(3046, 1050), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1680, 1680)

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome 3 and one Viewsonic 1680x1050 monitor (DVI) and one Acer 1366x768 monitor (VGA). I tried installing the FGLRX driver, but this did not help.

Any suggestions to get both monitors working?

Have you tried setting them from Catalyst Control Center?
