problem with loading gui after installing unity 2d

well, i have a piece of an older hardware, a single core amd with an agp graphic card. 11.10 runs kinda slow, so i tried to install unity 2d. After i rebooted, all i get is a purple screen with the cursor that flicks on and off. I tried to get to recovery mode, but shift key during boot doesn't seem to do anything, same goes for ctrl+alt+f1. Now i have a completely unusable machine, since i don't have a live cd with me. I would apeiciate any help.

For older hardware, Ubuntu really is not suitable. I would recommend instead using a lighter distro. Suggestions include Xubuntu, Lubuntu (very light), and Bodhi (derived from, but not part of, the Ubuntu family, and even lighter than Lubuntu).
