Installing LAMP as a Development Server

There are a number of LAMP installation tutorials around, some of which get glowing reviews and comments. However, it is unclear whether these cover a straight server environment, or what I am looking for, is to install LAMP on my netbook PC as a development machine.

Is there any difference in the LAMP setup for the two environments ?

I am just 'migrating' to Ubuntu, and some things are very different.

    All advice and help appreciated.
    Thanks.

Ubuntu server environments are often based on LTS releases, so the software versions are usually older. Else the setup should be the same since Ubuntu distinguishes only in rare cases between server and other uses (mainly the kernel).

There's no functional difference between a desktop and server installation of the LAMP stack. I have Apache installed on this machine for testing purposes, and simply pointing a browser at http://localhost/ brings up the default web page, /var/www/index.html.
