ext4 is perfectly fine. Even before I think it wasn't an issue with problems, it was more of a precaution by some people not using ext4 immediately after it was released. I have used it since it was available, haven't seen any issues.

I am wondering if the live cd has some "issues" with your disk. One option would be trying with the alternate cd, with or without partitions created in advance.
I started with the alternate install media. Got the same result from the desktop version too.
I'm starting to think it's the drive's firmware, but then, the one guy I talked to got the same results. I don't know if his hd was WD, Seagate, or something else. 3 TB is fairly new so there may be some issues with bootable installs. I know the big drives are supposed to work with Windows 7, not Xp or anything else but I haven't read anyone who has done it with Windows.

I decided to try Linux Mint this time partitioning looked good but the sizes were incorrect maybe once it's done it will look different.

Another 10 or 15 minutes I'll know.
