minecraft and unity 3d on radeon x1600

Hello, short and simple a friend of mine is having trouble with ubuntu 11.10 on his laptop. It has an ati radeon mobility x1400 gpu. Running the radeon drivers, we can run unity 2d quite smoothly, and he has even gotten no$gba (Nuntendo DS emu) working in wine. However, we can't boot unity 3d.

We havn't yet tried fglrx, for fear of it sending him to a terminal session with no escape, as he is in another state and I lack physical access to his laptop.

The only thing we want to do is play minecraft, which I know the radeon drivers can do, I've had it running on a desktop X600.

    Thanks for any clues

Don't. It doesn't support that GPU anymore.
