WoW // Actual State with ATI Cards

    Hello Guys

For me, WoW is pretty much the only Reason why i do have installed Windows atm. It sucks.

I tried to switch over to many Linux, especialy Ubuntu, very often but i had a Radeon HD4650 and i couldnt log in more than some Seconds, it crashed in the opengl mode. Even with a clean Wine install.

A few days ago i got a MSI Radeon 6770 from a Friend and i am tempted to try it again. Has someone experience with WoW and such newer Cards ? does the Opengl mode from WoW run better there or is the Direct3D Playable too there ?

I have an older ATI card.. it is a Radeon HD 3450 and I've always gotten wow to run pretty easily and about as good as it did via Windows.. There are many great sites that can give you a few tips to get WoW running good via Wine.. Post some terminal output from when the game crashes and maybe some of us could help.

Which Linux distro are you currently using?

I'm running the Ubuntu 10.10 because I'm getting the best results there, both in gaming and in desktop environment. WoW worked with DirectX9 but the best results were given with the opengl mode. Except for poor "liquid" and "Sun Shade" qualities it works just as well as in windows. I'm getting greater FPS actually. Around 60 fps in Windows, and around 80,90 in Linux! =)

I've got an older card too (ATI Radeon HD4200) and I can get it running somewhat nicely on Ubuntu 10.04.4 with a few Wine registry tweaks designed for AMD/ATI cards and some tweaking to ingame graphics settings.

That new card you got should work nicely.

Is it a clean wow installation aswell? Because if you're using an old wow map(even though you have updated with the launcher) you're addons might be old and could trigger a crash...

Look over ATI Control Center settings, make sure that the AA is set to use application settings etc.

Have you tried both wine 1.2(I'm using this and it works great) or the 1.3 version?

In my experience the 10.04 version have worked well with WoW, but unless it's an issue with other softwares I recommend the 10.10 version.
