I'm planning to install the latest version of the Netbeans IDE along with JDK,

JavaTM SE Development Kit 6 Update 29 and NetBeansTM IDE 7.0.1 Software Bundle,

from

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/ja...sp-142931.html.

The instructions given,

www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/install-jdk6-22nb691-177131.html,

are straight forward but there is a step that precedes this installation that concerns me.

That step is to upgrade to the latest version of Java.
You can check if your version of Java is up-to-date at

http://java.com/en/download/installe...0.0-12-generic

There I'm told that my Java is not up-to-date and a free download is recommended.
We're also told that the current version of Java should be removed before updating to the latest version.
Though this removal is recommended, instructions for doing the removal are provided only for a Windows system.

Is it even necessary that Java be upgraded? What do I have to do to remove my old version of Java?

Many thanks and regards - Randy
